Deadpool 2 is on its way, and with it comes the rolling waves of fan theories. Some are comic-based, some fully reliant on the trailers, and some are so outrageous they actually kind of make sense. While there’s really nothing about the Merc with a Mouth that will surprise us after he’s engaged in the most weirdest relationships in the world of comics, taken out every character in the Marvel universe, and carried around his own yapping head as a buddy, some interesting fan theories may play out yet in the film.
Sadly some fan theories have already been demolished by movie makers, much to the disappointment of fans. Nevertheless there are many left to tempt us with, and who knows how much misdirection we’re dealing with? While we’re certain that the movie itself will carry even more shocking scenes and fantastically foul-mouthed lines, we can’t help but hope that we’ll have a winner with one of these fun fan predictions.
No matter their origins or whether or not they’re happening in the movie, they’re all creative and a blast to speculate about.
Here are 12 Deadpool Fan Theories That Could Still Be True (And 3 That Are Disproven).
Mister Sinister Is The Villain
Could Mister Sinister indeed be the villain in Deadpool 2? In the brief trailer where Deadpool appears to be Bob Ross, in his painting there’s a hint at Mister Sinister appearing in the movie. It could be a red herring, especially since Sinister hasn’t been featured much outside the comics and fans typically associate him with Scott and Jean, but the style in which he is revealed truly makes us think he’s connected somehow.
He is prominent in Cable’s story as well, so it would make sense to include him.
Sinister is a telepathic villain, so the cartoony instability we witnessed in Deadpool at the end of the first movie, which is often evident in the comic, could invite Sinister in for some nefarious mind control.
Vanessa’s secret identity
Though Zazie Beetz is playing Domino in Deadpool 2, comic readers know that Vanessa has been Domino at times, leading many to theorize this will be her true identity in the film. Many theorize she is actually Death as well, which is why Wade is so enamored with her. Why else would he be so obsessed with a woman who wants to destroy as much as Vanessa’s comic alter ego does.
It also makes sense for the movie. Not only does she survive the drop in that gas box without oxygen with no explanation save for the toss of his sword, but she also meets him the day Weasel has bet on him to die and he proposes to her the day he’s supposed to die.
While these all may be coincidences, they are also just crazy enough to work for a Deadpool story. Death wouldn’t be his weirdest hook-up.
Disproven: Deadpool Is Part Of The MCU
While Reynolds insists that Deadpool works within the X-Men universe, theories suggesting that it’s actually a part of those films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have since been disproven. More specifically, fans believe that the first film takes place following the first Avengers movie, which is supported by a single piece of evidence: the final fight scene takes place on a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier.
The reason this can’t be true, of course, is the simple fact that Disney, which owns the MCU, would never allow the kind of language and violence present in Deadpool. The movie concept artist admitted that the helicarrier was an inspiration for the movie, but it was also designed to be just different enough to establish separation between the two.
Still, with the Fox-Disney deal, Deadpool’s (likely tangential) involvement in the MCU could one day come. Whatever that means for Josh Brolin, who plays both Thanos and Cable, is unclear.
Negasonic Teenage Warhead Could Cross Over with New Mutants
This theory is mostly based on one piece of visual evidence: a uniform. When fans caught wind of Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s new uniform, many automatically reached for a connection between the Deadpool 2 film and the New Mutants movie.
The uniform is the spitting image of a New Mutants uniform, so including it and not making a connection would be pointless.
While Brianna Hildebrand isn’t listed among the New Mutants cast like Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams - neither is Negasonic, for that matter - it wouldn’t be the first time a character was utilized in a new way for expediency.
Ryan Reynolds reminded us of that when he told Empire, “This film certainly works within the context of the X-Men universe but it doesn’t necessarily include the sensibilities of an X-Men movie. It’s like taking an X-Men character, pumping him full of [hallucinogenics] and then releasing him back into the fold.”
Julian Dennison Is Secretly Hope Summers
New Zealand child actor Julian Dennison is in the trailer for some reason, and many fans are speculating that he’s the movie version of Hope Summers. While it makes sense that Hope would be in the film since Cable was spotted with a teddy bear, Hope is supposed to be female, so this would be a huge departure from the comics. There hasn’t been a single Marvel adaptation that is 100% true to its source material, so of course this is a liberty that could be taken.
From the trailers, it seems like Deadpool is focused on protecting Dennison’s character from Cable, which is what Deadpool does for Hope in the comics.
Dennison is the perfect age match to play Hope, and given his comedic capabilities and obvious dark humor presented in the trailer, he would be a perfect fit for the movie. But will he be Hope? We’ll have to wait and see.
X-23 Or Psylocke May Appear
In addition to Hope Summers appearing in the movie, fans are speculating that X-23 or Psylocke will turn up, too. Not only did Deadpool himself hint that we needed more X-Men in the previous film when he noted that the budget wouldn’t allow for any other characters to be present in the mansion, but they’re also both members of X-Force.
There’s a purple-haired mutant in the trailer who could be Betsy Braddock, but plenty of fans are also guessing that the actress, Shioli Kutsuna, is supposed to be the blue-haired Surge.
Given that Wolverine is often present in the misadventures of Cable and Deadpool, some fans are also hoping that X-23 will come into play somewhere to connect the timelines together.
Stryfe May Be In The Movie
There’s a photo serving as the roots of this theory, and it’s rather compelling: Josh Brolin, standing in front of a mirror, screaming in rage or even agony at his own reflection. Another red herring? Maybe, but it would also make sense that he is hinting at the possibility of facing his loathed evil clone, Stryfe. Fans have to remember that no matter what happens between Nathan Summers and Wade at first, neither is the bad guy (okay, not really the bad guy). This should be familiar territory after dealing with Colossus a bit in the previous movie.
Stryfe, on the other hand, is bad news, and it would make perfect sense for him to be the real villain of the movie. Stryfe with Sinister and Black Tom might be overkill, though.
Disproven: Black Tom Was Cut From The Movie
Jack Kesy was cut from the Deadpool 2 film after rumors of his role as Black Tom Cassidy circulated the web. The fan theory came to a screeching halt when Meet the Movie Press announced that Kesy had been chopped from the movie. While it was never confirmed that Kesy was Black Tom, he was meant to play another villain, and most believed that Black Tom made the most sense here.
Except Collider is now reporting that an inside source claims that while Kesy’s role was indeed reduced, his character was not cut from the film entirely. C0-writer Rhett Reese confirms this news.
This makes sense given that audiences requested more on-screen time from both Cable and Domino during early screenings. Perhaps Kesy’s scenes took one for the team. The jury is still out on whether or not Black Tom will be in the movie.
Deadpool Is Ernest Hemingway
You either love or hate Ernest Hemingway, so what better way to make him more palatable toward the masses than to use Deadpool to portray him?
There’s an entire video that explains this theory, from setting up Pool’s adventure as the (loosely adapted) plot of The Old Man and the Sea, to Pool’s healing factor to his worldly travels and friendship with Wolverine. As absurd as this theory sounds, it’s actually more believable the more you peer at it, and it’s not even close to being the most unbelievable theory out there.
Still, if Pool is old Hemmy, how will it come to play in the next movie? Maybe they’ll be a nod to the theory, but in all probability, those who follow this idea will likely have to continue proving it on their own– especially if it’s a running tactic for the comics themselves.
Disproven: Shatterstar, Sunspot, And Feral Will All Appear
As much as we’d love to see X-Force team members Shatterstar, Sunspot and Feral in Deadpool 2, they won’t be making any appearances… or, three of them won’t, at least. According to Rhett Reese, the trio would not be in the movie, but Stefan Kapičić, who plays Colossus in the film, tells audiences of the trailer, “That’s not CGI of Terry Crews, that is Terry Crews. You can see it clearly You can see behind him, Shatterstar, a really cool thing for people to geek out.”
If Kapičić is telling the truth here– and why would he lie?– we may see at least one of the characters that fans theorized about in the movie after all. We know there are new mutants appearing and we know there are some identities yet to be revealed, so this is another wait and see theory.
Wade Is A Hyperkinetic Mutant
Could Wade Wilson have had mutant powers prior to the emergence of his healing factor after the cruel experiments executed upon him by Ajax and company? Plenty of fans say yes, and they mostly point toward his finesse as a fast and accurate mercenary with a pretty stellar track record as proof.
On the other hand, many fans claim that since Lady Death is in love with Deadpool, he isn’t even a mutant at all. He is only immortal because she refuses to let him pass away. Then there are the purists who insist that he is a mutate, since he wasn’t born with the healing factor and it required an exterior catalyst in order to manifest.
The film could address these theories, but given the tightly-packed trailer crammed with characters, it’s doubtful.
Fox Is Rebooting Firefly
Hold up: What in the name of Weasel does Firefly have to do with Deadpool? In short, nothing, but there’s a Firefly poster behind Pool while he’s running in the trailer.
On the surface, it’s probably an allusion to time travel; there are other nods to days gone by, including a phone booth, too. But fans are suggesting that this means that Fox will finally follow through with the rumor of a Firefly reboot.
They may be clinging to a pipe dream here, especially since the poster is much more likely an homage to costar Morena Baccarin, who actually starred in Firefly. Then again, it could also simply be Reynolds poking fun at yet another abandoned Fox project that could’ve turned into a huge moneymaker had the network deemed it worthy to continue or pursue in the first place, as he’s done previously with Deadpool.
Vanessa Is Copycat
Readers of the comics know that Pool’s main squeeze Vanessa is actually Copycat, a mutant who not only posed as Domino and attempted to take out her lover several times but who can pretty much morph into anyone she chooses. She has even morphed into Siryn, with whom Deadpool was in love with at the time, and seduced him under false pretenses just because she could.
But will Morena Baccarin transform into Copycat? The Baccarin expressed hope that she will, even if there aren’t plans for the transformation in the films. Baccarin has mentioned the character’s “evolution,” which further prompts fans to look toward her character’s development. If so, the couple likely won’t be in for the same happy ending we saw in the first movie.
Negasonic Has A Girlfriend
The possibility of Negasonic Teenage Warhead having a girlfriend in Deadpool 2 is one most of us celebrate. Frankly there aren’t enough LGBT characters in the Marvel universe (or in media, period), but it’s also something we could just see happening. She’s a young mutant who should have a love interest: in fact, romance is half the plot when it comes to teen X-Men in many storylines.
If this rumor is indeed true, it means that we may not see Psylocke (or Surge), and that the purple-haired mutant in the trailer is a complete newcomer as well as Negasonic’s girlfriend. While we love this idea, we also argue that there are so many great X-Men comics characters to choose from that there’s no reason to create a whole new character. What about Bling or Karma?
The Teaser Trailer May Have Depicted Uncle Ben’s Passing
One of the most interesting fan theories about Deadpool concerns one of the teaser trailers released. Fans think that the old man taken out during a robbery is none other than Ben Parker, uncle to Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man.
Deadpool seems surprised to be transported to the ’90s in the trailer, indicating that he has traveled to the past where Ben was eliminated. The scenery also appears to be New York City, which would be the correct location for his murder, although it isn’t definitive.
Then there’s that pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, which could solidify the point, if there is one. It could be the biggest red herring of all.
If it is Ben’s passing, it’s a pretty insensitive way of connecting the universes– which, let’s be honest here, is the Deadpool way.
